Meet Mollie, a 4-year-old Standard Poodle. Mollie came into our world suddenly and unexpectedly — in the wake of a devastating loss. Her dad, Carl, was a neighbor and friend to longtime Doglando members.
As usual, Carl was seen working around his home and walking Mollie engaging with his neighbors. However, recently he and Mollie were not observed for over 24 hours which was concerning and trusting their instincts, his neighbors
Trusting their instincts, his neighbors stopped by after work to check in — and heartbreakingly discovered that Carl had passed away suddenly. In the midst of shock and grief, Mollie needed somewhere to land. So, they brought her to us.
Since arriving, Mollie has adapted quickly to what must feel like a completely foreign world. From the moment she stepped into our care, we focused on supporting her safety and comfort — but just as importantly, giving her space for robust movement. The ability to run, to move freely, to discharge and regulate through her body — all essential pathways for the nervous system to begin finding resilience again. She has naturally gravitated toward her male foster, which makes sense.
Mollie is joyful, loving, and deeply responsive. It is clear she was Carl’s world — his companion in the truest sense — and that devotion shows. You can see it in the way she seeks connection, in her softness, in her ease with touch. The care she received is reflected in her demeanor. She knows what it means to belong.
As Mollie moves through this profound life transition, our hope is that her next chapter brings her back into the kind of companionship she has always known — a human presence that is steady, close, and woven into daily life. Mollie is a dog who has lived alongside someone who was truly with her. Someone who was home. Someone who didn’t leave her alone for long stretches. Someone whose presence was part of the rhythm of her days.
There is something deeply special about dogs who share life with retired or older companions. These relationships are often quiet, intentional, and rooted in time spent together. And yet, too often, we place pressure on these individuals — asking them to consider future loss before recognizing the extraordinary gift they offer right now: presence, availability, and shared life. It is a gift to be loved by someone who is there.
In protecting this fragile transition for Mollie — and in honoring what we can only imagine Carl would have wished for her — we move forward with deep care. We have walked this path before with dogs who have lost their closest companions. It is not a role we take lightly. It is one we carry with profound responsibility — to ensure that the next human, or family, in Mollie's life is one she would have chosen… had Carl been there to choose alongside her in his final days.
And in all of this, we hold Carl with deep respect. The love he gave Mollie is still present — in her softness, in her trust, in the way she leans into connection. She carries the imprint of a life lived beside someone who was truly there for her. We will never replace Carl. But we can honor him. By ensuring that Mollie’s next chapter reflects the same quiet devotion he gave so freely — a life where she is not simply cared for, but truly accompanied. May the love he poured into her continue forward, in the presence of someone who understands that being with a dog is the greatest gift we can offer.
